Denmark is thinking about building a military base in Greenland
Denmark plans to build a military airbase in the west of Greenland to demonstrate force against unfriendly countries and increase the personnel of the main headquarters of the Arctic Command in the Greenlandic capital Nuuk. This was reported by TV2 on January 16 with reference to a secret statement of the Danish Armed Forces.
According to the TV channel, this document was developed back in September 2024.
"The base is supposed to accommodate and receive Danish F-35 fighter jets for periodic stay and landing in the settlement of Kangerlussuaq, which is related to the readiness to repel possible attacks and maintain sovereignty, as well as to demonstrate strength on the territory of the Kingdom of Denmark," the TV channel quotes the statement of the military command.
It is noted that the base will help strengthen the defense of Greenland's infrastructure, as well as the power plants there.
"The base should be able, in particular, to cope with the periodic presence and landing of Danish F-35 fighter jets in Kangerlussuaq in connection with periodic preparations to repel attacks and assert sovereignty," the statement emphasized.
In addition to F-35 fighter jets, the base will be used for long-range drones that will fly between Aalborg and Greenland to monitor the situation in the North Atlantic.
In addition, there are plans for a mobile military base in Greenland that can be moved by transport aircraft.
The cost of the base in Kangerlussuaq could be more than $150 million.
On January 10, Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin said that the United States is creating airfield infrastructure in Greenland for the F-35 at the U.S. Pituffik military space base. According to the diplomat, F-35 fighter jets have already used the base's airfield during US Air Force exercises. At the same time, he also pointed to the presence of the U.S. military on the territory of Greenland since World War II.
