Moscow has started preparing the second unmanned streetcar for launching
A second unmanned streetcar is planned to be launched in Moscow. The transport, which is based on the Lion-Moscow model, is being tested on the territory of the Krasnopresnensky depot in the Strogino district, the capital's Department of Transport said in its Telegram channel on January 16.
Now the streetcar system duplicates the driver's actions, the conditions of movement on the test site are close to urban ones. Specialists check the work of radars, lidars and cameras, as well as test the basic functions of the streetcar.
The first unmanned streetcar was launched in Moscow in 2024, it has traveled more than 3.2 thousand kilometers in the city and has never violated traffic rules, said Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of the capital for Transport.
While the actions of the streetcar is controlled by the driver, but in 2025 it is planned to completely transfer it to an autonomous mode. This event is expected at the end of the year, the mayor of the capital Sergey Sobyanin told earlier.
On January 6, the head of Moscow said that more than 190 million trips were made on streetcars in the capital in 2024, which is almost 20% more than a year earlier. According to him, the integration of streetcars into the rail framework of the city continues, "successfully complementing the existing metro, MCC and MCD lines". More than 15 kilometers of streetcar tracks were upgraded last year, improving the smoothness of streetcars and reducing noise levels. In the coming years, Moscow plans to purchase another 100 new streetcars of the latest generation of domestic production.
