More than 70% of young people polled in the US opposed banning TikTok
73% of Americans aged 13 to 39 oppose the blocking of TikTok in the United States. This was reported on January 16 by Axios portal with reference to a survey by the research organization YPulse.
In particular, 64% of respondents said they would miss the content published in the social network, while 58% would miss specific accounts and authors.
In addition, a quarter of survey participants said that blocking the platform would affect their professional activities and income.
The majority of respondents intend to switch to other platforms in case TikTok is banned - for example, YouTube or Instagram (owned by Meta, a company recognized as extremist and banned in Russia). At the same time, only about a quarter of Americans consider themselves dependent on the social network.
The day before it was reported that TikTok is going to stop the work of its application in the United States against the background of the ban, which should come into force on Sunday, January 19. Thus, if the U.S. Supreme Court does not overturn this ban, the platform will have to leave the American market.
At the end of December 2024, US President-elect Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court to suspend the law banning TikTok. He requested additional time to study the measure after his inauguration, which will take place on January 20.
In April 2024, current US President Joe Biden signed a law banning TikTok in the country. Congress linked the decision to the threat to national security from China. The ban was promised to be lifted if ByteDance sold the US division of the social network within nine months. In response, the platform announced its intention to defend in court the right to work.
